Biomedical Health Informatics - University of Minnesota

IHI and AMIA

For almost three decades, faculty members within the Institute for Health Informatics have been elected as Fellows into the prestigious American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) a "college of elected Fellows from the US and abroad who have made significant and sustained contributions to the field of medical informatics (AMIA)".

This year, Drs. Bonnie Westra and Marty LaVenture joined their ranks.

See below for a list of ACMI Fellows who have been involved in the development of the informatics program at the University of Minnesota.

  • Eugene Ackerman, PhD, retired (1985)
  • Christopher G. Chute, MD, DrPH (1995)
  • Donald P. Connelly, MD, PhD (1986)
  • Connie J. Delaney, PhD, RN, FAAN, FACMI (2004)
  • George Demiris, PhD, FACMI, alumnus (2011)
  • Laël C. Gatewood, PhD (1984)
  • Martin LaVenture, MPH, PhD (2011)
  • Stuart M. Speedie, PhD (2008)
  • Bonnie Westra, PhD (2011)
  • William A. Yasnoff, MD, PhD, (1989)

ACMI is just one way that members of the IHI community are involved in the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), the association of which ACMI is a part. AMIA is the professional organization for translational bioinformatics, clinical research informatics, clinical informatics, consumer health informatics, and public health informatics.

Dr. Connie Delaney was recently recognized for her service to AMIA as a member of the Board of Directors for the last six years.

Dr. Stuart Speedie is the Chair and Dr. Bonnie Westra is the Secretary of the AMIA Academic Forum, a group within AMIA made of representatives from biomedical and health informatics graduate programs throughout the country. Stuart and Bonnie presided over a meeting of the group at the AMIA Fall Symposium.

2011 Annual Symposium

October 22-26, 2011
Washington Hilton, Washington, DC

AMIA hosts several conferences each year, the biggest of which is the annual symposium. The University of Minnesota and the Institute for Health Informatics were well-represented at this year's symposium. Rui Zhang, Health Informatics Graduate student was one of the eight finalists in the Student Paper competition. Click here to read more about our involvement in this year's conference.
